Cameron Boy Scouts Troop 752 take the district title at the Tejas Swim Meet in Rockdale on Monday. Scout Master Felix Matula leads with standout performances across breathing hold, beginners freestyle, and backstroke events, with multiple skaters earning top places.
Milam County records show a new Bulles Oil and Gas wildcat No. Leonard Allen on a 179 acre David Houston Survey lease six miles southeast of Rockdale, with Wilcox basal test planned at 2900 feet. A second discovery, V P Head and associates No. 2 Mrs John McLerran, was brought in late last week on a 224 acre William H. Clemons Survey near Cameron, awaiting storage tanks and pump.
City workers this week marked streets with a two hour parking limit as part of a newly adopted ordinance. The rule, passed at the Chamber of Commerce request, aims to free shopper spaces in main business districts. Dr Travis Green, a Rockdale physician since 1952, plans a move to Austin to join the Texas State Welfare Department medical staff. Cameron announces fall term begins Tuesday September 2 under Superintendent D R Dodson with full opening day schedule. Pre school faculty meeting August 29, schedules and registrations for fall classes start August 11 in Yee High School principal Alvis Fuquay says registrations for entering first grade set for August 19 at Ben Milam School.
Milam County residents backed rural water welfare survivors benefits and student loans in a Tuesday special election. The water bond amendment trailed by about six thousand votes and defeat was conceded for that item.
Voters in Milam County cast 6 408 ballots in November with mixed results on nine amendments. Water bond No 2 failed 522 to 1247, No 3 salary raises for legislators failed 41 to 1273, No 4 tax exemption for rural water firms failed 896 to 52, and No 8 loan provision passed 98 to 864. Other measures drew varied counts with No 1 792 896 No 5 11 715 No 6 68 88 No 7 1076 700 and No 9 85 1120.
