Desperado L C Cobb Escapes and Flees Milam County

Bridges in Milam county were blocked Wednesday night as officers joined Deputy LeRoy Massengale in the hunt for L. C. Cobb an escaped prisoner and kidnapper. Cobb who had been arrested in the Sharpe Jewelry Store robbery is under murder sentence and was last seen abandoning one car and taking another on the Houston highway toward Milam County. No trace of him had been found by Thursday.

Rangers Inspect Cattle Trucks in Milam County

Texas Rangers completed a multi day operation in Milam County focusing on cattle trucks. Deputy Sheriff LeRoy Massengale reported Rangers will halt all cattle in transit on highways until drivers show bills of sale. The measure aims to curb cattle thefts statewide.

Mrs Carolina Bruder Dies in Burlington

Mrs Carolina Bruder dies Wednesday morning at 3 80 at her daughter’s home near Burlington. Born in Germany in 1870 she came to the United States in early childhood. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2 30 pm from the Lutheran church in Burlington with Rev Kalkbrenner. Burial in Burlington cemetery directed by Green Funeral Home.

Re elected Mr Slavik widely known community leader in the RVOS was chosen for a four year term as secretary. He received no opposition and was honored for years of service at the West convention. Man Pleads Guilty in Axe Attack Case

Lonzo Colbert pleaded guilty to an axe attack on his mother in law in February in County Court and received 120 days in jail with taxpayers funding his confinement. Other county court actions included a $25 fine for Buck Perez and fines for Jake Thomas for displaying a public safety item.

Slavik Declares Candidacy for Texas House Seat

Milam Theatre Burns. Rebuild Planned Amid Heavy Loss

A fire of undetermined origin at 3 a m destroyed the Milam Theatre and damaged nearby buildings. Owner Stanley Swift returned after sunrise and said the theater would be rebuilt. Firefighters confined damage to the theatre. several adjacent establishments also suffered damage. Patrons to attend Cameron Theatre on Saturdays as replacements with no price change.

Dick Young Named Assistant Coach by School Board

Dick Young of Jones Prairie was elected Assistant Coach by the School Board Tuesday night to replace R P Bennett who moved to Brownsville. The decision was reported by Drayton McLane, a board member, who praised the selection. Young, a former Thrall coach and Centenary College graduate, played center on the 1952 undefeated team under Homer Norton now at Texas A and M, and Norton called him the best center he ever coached.
