A record 259 entrants compete in the Rockdale Youth Rodeo sponsored by the Roping and Cutting Club at Fair Park. The five night run opens Tuesday August 11 at 8 p.m. with a packed crowd expected and a new horse trailer awarded for the high point performer.
Mrs. Sandra Sue Attaway of California testified in Brownsville district court that Charles V. Harrelson told her he killed Sam Degalia Jr. on July 6, 1968 so Pete Thomas Scarmado could collect life insurance. Scarmado, once Harrelson partner in Commodity Market Service, was convicted as an accomplice and is on seven years probation. Her Edinburg trial testimony previously covered the same claims amid a hung jury.
Stanislaw, a Rockdale native and 1958 All State football pick, is named head coach and athletic director at Somerville High School. He coached Cameron from 1968 to 1971 after an assistant role and a District Championship win in 1967 before entering private business.
Federal District Judge Jack Roberts approved Waco ISD’s desegregation plan which preserves neighborhood schools and uses feeder systems so students from a given neighborhood move together from kindergarten through twelfth grade.
Empty beef counters and high pork prices greeted Georgetown shoppers Monday as local groceries faced a severe meat shortage. HEB awaited meat deli deliveries while Food Mart and Piggly Wiggly showed alarmingly low supplies. Hoarding may rise as beef prices are frozen.
The district court hears a clash over McGregor Airport property annexation by McGregor and the City of Waco. Legal sparring since October 1972 centers on McGregor’s 1966 annexation and Waco’s 1973 expansion plan.
Empty beef counters and rising pork and poultry prices press Cameron grocery stores as the Phase 4 beef price freeze keeps beef off the auction block. Ground meat will be scarce after this week with little hope for beef until September 12. Chicken prices jump from 49 to 79–85 cents per pound while pork costs rise. eggs hit 98 cents a dozen.
The American Red Cross will fully support the federal National Blood Policy announced by HEW Secretary Caspar Weinberger. Policy promotes blood from volunteer donors to reduce hepatitis risk and calls for tighter federal regulation of blood banks and processing centers. Red Cross president George M. Elsey notes 26 years of advocacy for an all volunteer system, facing opposition.
Douglas Buck of the Milam ASCS office reports that there will be no government set-aside of land for 1974 to ensure ample supplies for domestic and export markets. The plan frees farmers to focus on producing cotton, feed grains, soybeans, and wheat.
Governor Dolph Briscoe approved two grants totaling 246 424 dollars from the Criminal Justice Council to aid Central Texas Council of Governments. One 237 290 dollar award funds a regional law enforcement radio network for seven counties including Bell Coryell Hamilton Lampasas Milam Mills and San Saba. The CTCOG system uses high band gear to cut police response times and reduce maintenance.
