Milam County Democrats Vote Narrowly on Pension Endorsement

A Milam County Democratic convention produced two resolutions backing O'Daniel and pledging support for his November election but rejected a direct endorsement of the $30 old age pension payment by a 12 to 7 vote. Employment Progress At Cameron Office Report

The Texas Employment Service in Cameron hotel lobby now serves Milam and Robertson Counties with weekly itinerant service at Hearne. Local manager R. C. Moody said 135 people were placed in July along with initial claims and 75 continuing unemployment compensation claims filed. A Texas Unemployment Compensation Commission representative is available to assist claimants.

Rotarians Plan Award to High School Student

Cameron Rotary Club voted to establish an annual recognition for the outstanding senior. Dr. Clifford Swift to form a committee to set eligibility rules and oversee a gift prize to be displayed in a downtown storefront window. Superintendent E A Perrin applauded the gesture while the club discussed future civic projects including funding an iron lung for Cameron and nearby areas.

Largest Sun Flower Exhibited In Cameron County

N Hayes of Milano a successful truck farmer reported by bringing a fine crop of melons and the largest sun flowers seen in this section to the Herald office. A specimen measured four feet one inch in circumference and twenty inches in diameter, claimed as the largest in Cameron County. Sunflowers are noted for poultry feed in many regions.

Mrs J Otto Kelm Dies At Ben Arnold

Pioneer resident Mrs J Otto Kelm died Thursday morning at the family home in Ben Arnold. Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. from the Vogelsang church with Rev Kalkbrenner officiating. Interment will follow in Ben Arnold cemetery. She is survived by her husband and several children including Otto Kelm who works at Dan G Davis store in Sharp.

Liquor Permits Renewal Urged By Texas Agent

Texas Liquor Control Board agent J. D. Bassel told Cameron on Thursday permits expiring August 31 are being renewed now. Dealers should renew immediately to avoid last minute issuance as permits will be mailed two to three days before expiration and efforts to stamp out bootlegging continue. Bassel said headquarters are in Bryan.

First Bale of 1938 Cotton Ginned at Slocomb Gin

Cameron reports the first bale of 1938 cotton ginned by Slocomb Gin Company at noon Monday. E. B. Yeager of Jones Prairie produced the bale weighing 530 pounds with 980 pounds of seed. The bale will be sold Monday but a sale permit is required due to federal regulations.

Buckholts Bulletin Birthday Feature Discovered in 1908 Copy

A Buckholts resident delivered a July 4 1908 issue of the Buckholts Bulletin to the Herald office marking thirty years since its display. The five column paper carried Newton and Young physicians ads and noted Dr W R Newton once partnered with Dr Young in a local hospital before moving to Cameron.
