Milam County Recertified as Brucellosis Free for Three Years
Milam County remains certified as a modified brucellosis free area for three years after extensive testing of over 2000 cattle. Officials urge continued cooperation from the livestock industry, note ongoing screwworm cases, and advise timely detection and control measures. Farmers are reminded to avoid surgery during cold weather and to spray or dip livestock with recommended insecticides. Boll weevil control and bollworm risk warnings accompany the update.

Texas Farmers To Gain From Grain To Russia
Texas farmers stand to gain 25 to 30 million dollars over three years from a U.S. Soviet grain pact. About 3.5 percent of a 750 million dollar sales deal goes to Texas, with sorghum and corn key. If the pact rises to 1 billion, Texas producers could net 30 to 35 million. Surpluses and prices are expected to stay stable for U.S. consumers.

Fertilize Pastures For Fall For Stronger Grazing
Dr. Neal Pratt of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service says fall fertilization boosts forage quality and supports grazing or harvesting. Apply 80 to 100 pounds of nitrogen per acre in central eastern and Gulf Coast Texas, or at least 60 pounds elsewhere. Spring fertilization at 200 to 300 pounds per acre is less efficient. target smaller acreages with higher rates. County agents can provide area specifics. A 4-H camp closing ceremony and barbecue followed the program with numerous local participants and sponsors.
