Black Blizzard of 1935 Strikes Texas Panhandle Dark Sky Descent
In April 1935 a second Texas Panhandle dust storm, the Black Blizzard, blacked out skies from Amarillo to Tahoka. The event, part of the Dust Bowl, caused 15 minutes of darkness, damaged wheat crops worth about 20 million dollars, and led to widespread health and safety scares. Residents described blinding dust, zero visibility, and objects driven by 85 mph winds. Livestock and poultry suffered, and many towns faced poststorm cleaning and illness from dust pneumonia.
