Jesse Ray Walzel Memorial Team Roping Held in Caldwell
The ninth Jesse Ray Walzel Memorial Team Roping took place March 14 at the Buddy and Edile Lightsey Arena in Caldwell. Proceeds fund area youth scholarships. Winners were John Zschech and Ron Richmond for the nine rope, Clint Sanders and Coy Williams for the twelve rope, with sponsors listed including Mike and Judy Kirk and Milam County Livestock Auction.

Relay For Life Friday in Rockdale celebrates cancer fight
Rockdale hosts the 2009 American Cancer Society Relay For Life at Tiger Field starting 6 p.m. Friday and running all night as part of the program’s 25th anniversary. Funds raised exceed $300,000 for cancer research and support. Trina Edwards, event chairperson, notes teams camp out at the stadium and walk or run the track amid family activities, games, food, and auctions.

Rainy week boosts Gause area as 4-H hosts event
Gause residents report a green landscape after a week of rain. The 25th 4-H Shooting Sports Extravaganza drew participants from Milam County and across Texas to the State 4-H Center in Brownwood, with Gause 4-H members Seth Vinton Connelly Cameron Cooper Kristian and Kendall Lee joining other clubs. The group faced heavy rain on travel but enjoyed clear endpoints. The Gause ISD first and second graders will visit Washington on the Brazos Friday, toward the end of the 2008-2009 school year, while local youth continue baseball with teams in Cameron Rockdale and Hearne.

Estell Receives John Ben Shepperd Leadership Award
Dr. Lucile Estell of Milam County was honored by the Texas Historical Commission with the John Ben Shepperd County Historical Commission Leadership Award at the THC Annual Historic Preservation Conference in Lakeway. She has led Milam County efforts, chaired the Milam County Historical Commission, and helped secure local preservation grants and a county historic resource survey.
