J B Cranfil criticizes the Roosevelt administration and the New Deal, calling it a failed policy that drains prosperity and fosters ward- dom of the government. The piece contrasts his view with the era's economic fears and highlights military leaders Young and Chaffee rising from private ranks.
Dr. Clifford G. Swift is the new president succeeding Dr. E Rischar at the Milam County Medical Society. Dr. Barkley of Rockdale becomes secretary treasurer. Dr. Rischar will be a delegate with Swift as alternate to the state medical meeting in Galveston May 9 10 11 12. The Cameron meeting invited the traveling tuberculosis clinic for Cameron. date to be announced.
P. O. Armstrong of Cameron says his Jersey cows kept him on the farm and helped his family survive. He rents land, milks 14 cows debt free, and began selling milk when the Kraft Phenix plant opened, starting with one cow in 1936.
A Milam monument funded by Texas Centennial funds will be raised on the southwest corner of the Cameron courthouse lawn. Foundation work starts within a week with erection possible within the month. Inscription honors Benjamin Rush Milam born 1738 in Kentucky and notes his roles in the War of 1812, Texas history, and the capture of San Antonio.
Maurice Duperrey is the proprietor of three Paris factories making chemicals, abrasives, and bronzes and clocks. He oversees several Paris hotels, serves as administrator of the Paris Hotel Union, and is connected with hotel organizations, with more details on page 9.
R A Woodsie Devers announces candidacy for re election effective with the July 23 primary. Friends say he has served the people well as treasurer and wishes one more term before retiring. He notes his disability but remains active in his office.
City council tabled a Water Company resolution seeking to waive rights under a franchise option to value and purchase the water plant. The company did not admit validity of the franchise but would agree to appraisers if the city waives condemnation rights. The city earlier notified intent to buy, citing franchise provisions for appointing appraisers. The company’s resolution would be its first sign it might sell at a fair value to satisfy both sides.
Memorial Park in Nashville will be dedicated May 1 at the Old Nashville site, capital of Robertson's colony, more than a century ago. Milam County officials and descendants of Nashville pioneers plan the program, with citizens invited to attend the 2:30 p.m. ceremony.
Paul P Harris founder of Rotary was born in Racine Wisconsin on April 19 1868 He pursued public schooling and studies at the University of Vermont Princeton and Iowa earning PhB LL B and LLD He spent five years after 1891 traveling and gathering experience from journalism law work farming and overseas business to build early Rotary ties
The Rotary movement formed after five years of study by its founder on February 23 1905. Paw Pol Harris, an 8 year old Chicago attorney, met friends to discuss a club for business and professional men, aimed at mutual help. Within weeks, 19 members and officers started the Rotary Club of Chicago.
The State Department of Education notified Guy T. Newton County Superintendent that statewide applications for Teacher and Transportation Aid exceed appropriation. Schools may close one to three weeks early and some districts could cease operations unless winter starts. The legislature allotted 4.2 million for Teacher Aid and 1.78 million for Transportation Aid, triggering payment on a reduced basis.
Cameron Rotary received its charter from Rotary International at a banquet attended by 105 diners. Dr Clif ford G Swift accepted the charter presented by District Governor Alan S Pimental. Richard Hawking of Huntsville spoke on Rotary. Dr Arthur B Ballard led the meeting with a warm welcome.
Presbyterians in the city plan a large April 24 11 oclock roll call at the church begun sixty years ago from a 16 member charter growth steadily over time. The article notes new members joined by letter and by presentation during the past sixty days.
Farm students under FE D Parnell Cameron high school teacher of vocational agriculture won the state poultry judging contest. Cameron FFA team members Dana Monroe Lyle McDermott James Brock earned first in state at College Station Monday. Ninety seven Texas teams competed with Alpine second and Riezel dropping to fifth. Monroe was third high individual. team earned Leghorn trophy and tied for high on examination. They will represent Texas at the American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City next October to face state winners for national honors. BE D Parnell coached both teams. Other Cameron judged crops and soil conservation with results pending.
The Episcopal Church invites parishioners to Sunday morning prayers and a sermon at 1 o'clock on April 24 following the regular morning schedule. Attendees should gather in the church nave for worship and reflection.
Kirst Baptist church hosts A Y Dossey as one of Texas leading evangelists delivering Bible doctrine sermons. Rev Vernom G Miles says vast crowds fill services as other churches join the revival with ten days left climaxing the city’s spiritual event. Remaining topics include The end of the world and God’s books Thursday and Where are the dead Friday among others.
