J C Penny Company has leased the H F Smith building from B J Baskin Sons for eight years and will open a Cameron store. The building will be renovated with a new front and upgraded interior to company standards.
Western Auto Supply Company has leased the Scarbrough building previously housing Zalesky Dry Goods and plans a Cameron opening around June 1. The nationwide chain sells electrical goods household utilities and auto accessories.
Swift & Company announces lease on the Triggs building beside the Coward Garage as it enters Cameron milk supply. Purchase of milk cream and produce to begin at once with an official Herald notice to follow.
The Cameron High School Band under Francis Cox departs Thursday for a master division contest in Waco with Raleigh Hotel as headquarters. About 72 members, up from 55 in 1936, will perform in Class B against roughly 15 bands with parades Friday and awards Saturday night.
Cameron School board met Thursday night. New officers took oaths for Mrs W O Triggs Drayton McLane and J C Martin. A teacher committee led by Mrs Triggs with Dr T E Crump and Hilly Stedman will report around the second Thursday in May.
Milam County Judge Jeff T. Kemp is named chairman for Citizens Military Training camps in San Antonio for 1937 and 1939. Camp Bullis applications open July 7 to August 5. Milam attendees last year included Coleman Lansford Luter Poole William W. Wilson Paul C. Stach Cameron James E. McAtee Burlington Henry H. Rainwater Thorndale.
An Organization Committee led by Geo Graves as Chairman and J C Freeman as secretary and treasurer was named. Meetings occur this week across the county and all farmers are urged to attend. Local organization members will join both the county and state associations and the State Association is affiliated with the National Farm Bureau.

Miss Bertha Fae Strange, former Home Demonstration Agent, writes of the voyage to the Hawaiian Islands. She recalls lively shipboard entertainment and a triumphant Honolulu welcome with nine leis at arrival, a lei-bearing tradition to follow, and four days in a lush tourist locale.
Mrs. Lee Knight announces a two day Ninth District Parent-Teacher Conference in Temple on April 22 and 23. Cameron members are urged to attend as the event focuses on intensive study of parent teacher problems.
Milam County farmers are urged by County Agent Geo Banzhai to file 1937 Work Sheets without delay even if not seeking payments. Filing a Work Sheet does not commit the farmer. Milam receipts total 175,981.69 and checks are mailed when issued. A Friday meeting at the Court House discussed forming a Community Agricultural Association.
The Cameron Methodist Church hosts a district meeting as part of The Bishop's Crusade a drive to fund missions and liquidate a small debt. The program includes a fellowship dinner on April 28 marking the 89th anniversary of the sailing of early M E B missionaries Charles Taylor and Benjamin Jenkins with Rev N H Melbert as guest speaker.
The body of Charles Knight 48 of Austin was sent to Milam county for burial with services at North Elm cemetery conducted by the Cameron Masonic Lodges District Judge W G Gillis officiating Knight resided in Milam county at Yarrellton before moving to Austin about 15 years ago and was married to Miss Harry who with several children survives He was an employee of the city of Austin He died in Austin on Sunday after an automobile accident Saturday night in which he a daughter and a policeman were injured.
Funeral services for Mrs Ed B Tindall 46 of Curry were held at the Marlow Baptist church with Rev C C Acrey officiating. Interment followed in Marlow cemetery. She was born in Milam county and lived here most of her life, daughter of Mr and Mrs John W Story. Survived by six children and a large extended family. She had been ill since March 27 and died Monday evening.
Among recent Milam county deaths is Mary Evie Yates 64 of Tyler who died while visiting her son Roy Yates near Maysfield. The remains were sent to Tyler for burial on Monday.
A foreign missionary will speak at the Marlow Baptist church on Sunday, April 18, at 10 a m. The lecture will feature around 200 curios and color pictures including items such as Hidden Dagger and Monkey Skull Cure, along with several rituals and devices from India.
Governor Alfred Tor proclaims May 1 as Child Health Day in Texas marking the eleventh annual observance. Milam county’s health nurse Miss Pearl Fulford notes the day aims to improve conditions for child life and launches statewide health campaigns with all agencies urged to cooperate.
