The Ever Lengthening Shadow
Federal spending grew from under two thirds of California personal income in 1929 to roughly equal to the total personal income of many western states by 1947. In 1929 121 dollars per family were spent, 250 dollars in 1938, and about 984 dollars in 1948. When state and local spending is added total government outlay approaches one third of national income.

Truman proposes sweeping farm plan overhaul
April 7 1949 President Truman seeks to remove price floors from perishable foods like milk eggs and vegetables and introduce direct subsidies to farmers financed by taxes for losses to the farmer. The plan would also keep prices of grain and cotton up through loans and purchases to remove surpluses. Secretary Brannan presented the plan to House and Senate agriculture committees with heavy controls on farming still to be debated. Senator Aiken criticized enforcement features on the Senate floor.
