United Daughters Plan War Records Drive in Milam County

The United Daughters of the Confederacy met with Mrs. B. J. Baskin to organize collection of World War I service records for Milam County. Queries will go to families of the 1830 county men. Memorial for Confederate veterans set for April 27 at 2 PM at the Presbyterian church with Judge Graham Gillis presiding.

Man Shot Dead Near Hanover Home

A 65 year old farmer, Gus Ditto, was shot and killed at his Hanover area home. Sheriff L L Blaylock arrested neighbor Clint Calicott and jailed him as the suspect. No motive or examining trial date has been announced.

Reverend Abe Mulkey Dies After 69 Years Of Ministry

Longtime Texas evangelist Rev. Abe Mulkey died at his Corsicana home within a week of turning 69. A Baptist revival is under way at the Cameron church led by Rev. B. B. Blaylock, with sermons emphasizing lay outreach and revival, as mourners remember Mulkey’s life and his role in funding the Waco Methodist Orphanage.

Flying Circuses to Boost Victory Loan Drive Across U S

Three flying circuses formed by American French and British aviators will tour the United States in support of the Victory Liberty loan campaign. They will stage aerial sham battles and acrobatics in over fifty cities using captured German Fokker planes and the best American war planes. The tours start April 10 with the loan drive opening April 21. The mid western squadron will visit New Orleans Jackson Memphis Little Rock St. Louis Peoria Chicago Milwaukee Duluth Minneapolis.

Sap Highway Organization Active in Cameron Area

The Sap Highway Organization formed by Cameron business leaders and farmers from five counties is progressing. President T S Henderson reports the State Highway Commission will meet April 22 to 24 and the group plans to present on April 28 with full data on every mile, detailing why the road from Waco to Giddings is necessary.

Gulf Exports and Transportationman Barney Holland spoke at a traveling salesmen meeting led by J Henry Bennett. Scout Sells $2000 War Savings Stamps

Cameron boy scout Joyce Cox sold $1,000 of War Savings Stamps each to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hurst of Cameron. The Hurst couple also held $4,000 in Baby Bonds and Liberty Bonds and pledged readiness for the Victory Loan. The District Publicity Director praised Cox and urged him to report his total sales and include a photo in uniform.

Hefti Receives Letter From Son In Coblenz Germany

J M Hefti of Maysfield reports a letter from his son Henry written from Coblenz Germany. He states he is well and expects to return home in a few months. Henry was previously reported killed at Verdun but later wrote about the battle and this was published in the Herald.

Cotton Palace Coliseum Destroyed by Fire in Waco

The Cotton Palace Coliseum in Waco burned Tuesday afternoon with the fire found at 1 30 PM. The massive structure was deemed hopeless to save and reconstruction is planned to begin immediately for the 1919 show.
