John Ward and Maurice Bowling escaped jail on February 19 and returned to Gause on February 20. Deputies arrested them as they headed to Bowling’s sweetheart’s home near Gause. They claimed they rode a freight train from the escape and denied stealing Joe Luce’s car found abandoned later. Both used assumed names. Bowling faces arson and assault with intent to rob charges, while Weed also faces arsen.
N. D. Timmerman pastor of the First Baptist Church will speak Sunday night here on the topic Chiefest Crook in Cameron. The Baptists begin a revival meeting here on April 14.
In Tuesday’s election three aldermen were chosen for a two year term. Elected were Sam McDermott August Horstmann and Joe Bass with 374 total votes. McDermott and Horstmann tied at 199, Bass 185. Slocomb 175 Slaughter 162 Davis 142. Swearing in set for April 16 with Mayor Smith and new cabinet.
A Cameron Texas meeting on April 17 discusses the improved Federal Housing Act. John B. Henderson of the Chamber of Commerce arranges a 2.30 pm contractor and material men session at the old State Bank building and a 7.30 pm mass meeting at the court house. Hubert McPeak arranges the event. act enables monthly building plans, repairs or rebuilds with private capital now available.
Henry Reineke, 79, a pioneer Cameron resident, died at his home at 10 o'clock this morning. The body will be taken to Big Elm Cemetery near Marak for burial. A fuller obituary will appear in the Herald's next issue.
E. C. Cole of the Southern Pacific Lines announced that cantaloupe buyers from San Antonio will meet Cameron growers Wednesday April 10. The meeting aims to gauge acreage and arrange a market to purchase all cantaloupes produced.
W. C. Ellis of Belton, a locksmith who resided in Cameron for weeks, repaired the jail locks this week. He plans to remain for the weekend and notes prior pawned entries by prisoners. Ellis cannot guarantee confinement but promises fixed security. He reads the Herald in Belton and praises it as the best weekly paper in Texas.
Giles Avriett former county auditor and eight year vice president of First National Bank has accepted a position with an oil company in Gladewater Texas. His last day with the bank was April 1 and his family will move after school ends in June. William Sells returns as bookkeeper.
At 9 30 Wednesday night the home of Hayden Lawrence in East Cameron was almost totally destroyed by fire caused by a water hose under pressure. A second alarm brought another fire unit under Chief Thomas. The fire rekindled early this morning with another alarm. Mr and Mrs Lawrence were away when first discovered.
Ee B Hyer is named postmaster of Buckholts replacing Sam McWhinney after a Washington telegram from Congressman O H Cross announced the appointment. Congratulations are extended to Mr Hyer on his successful candidacy for the office.
The Cameron Comets meet the Knights of Columbus at Lawless Greenfield on Sunday April 7 at 3 50 p m in a season opener that also serves as a practice and conditioning game. Comets manager Heinie Walker and Knights manager Rudolph Richter rally support and report park remodeling is complete.
At a Presbyterian church session meeting A. J. Lewis was elected representative to the Central Texas Presbytery gathering in Taylor on April 23 24. Dr James Watson was named alternate.
Six 50 gallon barrels of mash a distiller and five empty barrels were seized by Sheriff Max Kennedy Deputy Sheriff Clarence McCall and officers Tuesday. The confiscated goods were found in west Cameron at the old Horstman place near Skeezix. no arrests were made as the house had just been vacated and was reported by a man checking the place for rent.
Judge Jeff T. Kemp reports that five and a half miles of Cameron to Minerva roadway have been authorized for construction. Bids will be invited for drainage and related work. The project, long sought, will benefit Cameron and surrounding communities.
Dr. Porter M. Bailes of Tyler will be the principal speaker at the Baptist revival starting April 14 in Cameron. Services will be held morning and evening. Subjects include Weapons of Our Welfare The Worst Thing in Cameron Will Hell Ever Be Vacated and The Place Called Calvary.
Albert Brooker who escaped jail near Milano was sentenced to five years on March 1, with a total of twenty years reduced to five per good record. Jack Watkins, jailed with Brooker, received six year terms rather than sixteen. Sheriff Blaylock notes prior reporting errors and corrections, including the claim Brooker escaped.
Joseph Matula Grocery in Santa Fe Town announces lower food prices and improved service to Herald readers. The store thanks patrons for support and notes large stock including farm feed. Felix Matula, a longtime local businessman, helps in the new venture.
John B. Henderson was elected President of the Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday night of last week. Albert Collins was elected first vice president, E. D. Parnell second vice president and B. F. Reichert treasurer. A secretary will be elected on April 9.
Zalesky promotes a pre Easter sale with lower prices on dry goods and new stock arriving for the holiday trade. The advertisement claims strong value and wide appeal as shoppers prepare for Easter.
Epispal Church announces services for next Sunday at 7 30 p m Lenten services on Wednesday evenings at 7 30 and Friday mornings at 9 00.
