Col T B Fraser writes from Sonren Sept 26 declining attendance at the Kershaw District Public Dinner for James Chesnut while urging a bold defense of Southern rights under the Constitution. Mexican relations move troops toward Rio Grande

A Washington dispatch dated 21st reports Cabinet agreement to deploy large U S forces across the Rio Grande to seize and hold Mexican territory to secure the frontier and transit routes. Detachments depart to New York and Jefferson Barracks Missouri to execute the plan amid alarms in Missouri and Kentucky over slave escapes and alleged railway disruption.

Public Meeting in Sumter Targets Transient Abolitionists

A Sumter town meeting chaired by Col. C. DeSchamps adopted a preamble and resolutions urging the town council to impose rigid surveillance on transient visitors, especially abolition emissaries, with a five member committee appointed to present the measures to the council and a next meeting set for the following Wednesday. The report mentions security concerns and calls for community cooperation.
