Fragmentary verse poem titled The Night with archaic phrasing depicts a summer night on a sapphire throne while autumn night presses, a stormy shout, a dream of taint, and a spring coming. It blends imagery of wind, storm, sorrow, and nature, ending with forest imagery and faint rhymes.
A story follows a shoemaker and several poor townspeople as a five dollar debt unravels. Mr Herriot refuses the loan, debts multiply, and in time the shoemaker lends goods and cash to the weary families, aiding a needlewoman, a mother with a coughing child, and a hungry baker. The tale ties to Mr Grant and the shop, showing how timely payments restore credit and provide relief to the needy.
A long vicennial rash of political squabbling and the election for a Delegate to Congress is examined. Reeder’s faction upholds a separate October vote despite the law fixing the first Monday in October for congressional delegate elections. Whitfield wins in the Territory with a strong proslavery showing, while Reeder’s camp denounces the process as a sham. The piece also discusses enterprise in the South, comparing Northern and Southern approaches, and cites statements by Virginia figures on price, productivity, and regional labor.
