Massachusetts Whig Convention Nominates Plankett for Lieutenant Governor

At the Boston session on August 16 the Massachusetts Whig Convention chose William C. Plankett as the lieutenant governor candidate by 5068 votes, over Palfrey who received 300. Delegates adopted resolutions affirming loyalty to liberty, the Constitution, and the Union, opposing expansion of slavery into new territories, calling for repeal of the Missouri Compromise provisions, and urging constitutional protections for fugitive slaves, trial by jury, and habeas corpus. The convention also backed a firm stance against the extension of slavery and criticized current federal policy while pledging to defend religious freedom and Massachusetts' rights.
