A Pendleton Farmer and Planter column argues for sheep over dogs, proposing taxes on dogs to curb roaming canines and protect sheep farms. It questions Negro dog ownership, suggests pig husbandry as alternative, and cites a patrol incident. The piece laments dog overpopulation hindering southern agriculture and calls readers to choose sides.
The piece reflects on young women’s assumed ignorance of household chores, contrasting romantic ideals with practical realities. It laments women judged by appearance, praises domestic competence, and threads in witticisms about marriage, illness, and a brief quip on sacred music meters.
