Poultry expert A R Winter says pullets require shade, space, fresh feed, and disease protection on summer range. Move brooder house, provide outdoor feeding and watering, and vaccinate before 15 weeks if past losses justify it.

Indiana tests show silage cut after pollination yields about half the dry matter per acre of hard kernel corn, with four foot height yielding under a tenth. Fodder from drought damaged corn may have higher protein but lower sugar and starch, and poorer shelf life, yet remains good feed.
Rye makes a limited but useful portion of hog rations when dry fed, providing up to 20 percent of the ration and about 90 percent of corn value when coarsely ground. Sheep tolerate unground rye like barley, but rye should contain little ergot, evident by purplish kernels, and ergoty grains should be avoided for pregnant animals.
