A rural loyalty poem extols a patriot who labors with a spade and hoe to grow ten bushels of potatoes. Neighbors mock his pace yet he endures toil behind a handpower plow, earning quiet respect. The piece valorizes the worker over soldiers and sailors after war.
No Longer Choice For Hoosier Inductees
Beginning July 1 Hoosier inductees will join a common pool for the Army and Navy as needs arise, ending prior ear marking. The change stems from uneven withdrawal rates for the two services. On July 1 registrants go to induction stations. Army draftees are sworn in and sent to an army reception center while Navy selections go to a navy recruiting station. Inductees still receive 21 day furloughs unless they volunteer for immediate induction.
