The Missouri born commander, Wellesley graduate and former professor, is nicknamed the Old Man by WAVES and aims to project a human, capable image while pushing expansion from 27 000 to 91 000 personnel.
Word from Sicily credits Delmar G. Roos known as Barney with shaping the Jeep that led Allied forces from Palermo to Messina. Roos, a former Society of Automotive Engineers president, worked on jeep blueprints as early as spring 1940 after stints at GE and several automakers. Born in New York, a Cornell engineering graduate, he once designed Pershing staff cars in WWI and later joined engines and locomotives, remaining a railway roundhouse enthusiast. He is married with four children and enjoys fast sports and locomotives.
Ten year old Ken McLaughlin selects the yearling filly of a troubled mare named Rocket on the Wyoming ranch. His decision fuels his father Captain McLaughlin’s anger as Ken struggles with schoolwork and responsibility. Flicka is injured leaping a corral while Ken helps a neighbor’s cow stranded by a fence, racing to fetch wire cutters.
Ken helps treat Flicka after a fall from a wildcat scare and Crosby’s cow incident. Gus and Ken tend the filly while the family returns home, and Ken’s father ultimately checks Flicka, then Rob safely rolls her to the other side. Flicka rises, cheered by all.
Flicka the horse suffers a swollen infected hind leg after wire cuts. Ken and Nell tend the wound with wet dressings and poultices while Ken learns care, grows taller, and forms a deep bond with the mare as he hopes for recovery.
Penny Singleton leads the Sew and Sew club to perform emergency sewing for servicemen in uniform repairs and alterations. Hollywood luminaries join as members to support the war effort. Joe Howard sells film rights to The Time the Place and the Girl. Dick Haymes signs film contract. Chinese studies during summer school with Edward Dmytryk. Kate Smith signs three year radio contracts.
