Public Service Commission held a hearing Monday on whether REMC should be allowed to set rates different from utilities. A decision was not reached as the meeting continued and projects for line upgrades were discussed but not completed.
New York era NYA projects, for youth aged 18 to 24, broadened before two years ago from recreational work to clerical sewing library aid and childcare. By opening more projects and proving skills, young women shifted toward leadership and recreation tasks with many moved into supervisory roles. The shift increased participation in sewing finishing and machine work and provided job prospects in bookbinding arts and related fields.
NYA plans for the coming year include employing about 2 500 youth with a raised age limit to 24 years. Eligibility requires certification of need by a public relief agency. Wages range from 14 to 25 dollars monthly for 35 to 50 hours, based on county city size and work type. Approximately 75 NYA projects are expected in Indiana across 47 counties facing sufficient eligible youth.
Calf judging to begin 12 15 Friday August 20 under Gold Medal Calf Club rules of the Indiana Livestock Breeder Association. Calves eligible after show prep and weight checks. Fair pays $1 per animal exhibited with top class earning gold silver and bronze medals. Friday judging continues at 1 00 P M with sire class and prizes including a free season in 1938 to the winning colt owner entrusted by listed owners. First place ribbons awarded. money awarded from second place onward.
Brig. Gen. William Naylor addressed 1670 M. T. C. enrollees at Fort Benjamin Harrison Indiana. He urged fair play and discipline as essential to civilian life and urged youths from Ohio West Virginia Kentucky and Indiana to uphold four cardinal virtues personal cleanliness fair play and self control during camp exercises. Captain C H Calais administered the oath to recruits.
The Social Security Board opens a Kokomo field office in the Armstrong London Building to serve Howard and surrounding counties. Christian Luecke is named manager. the eighth Indiana field office. The unit will aid old age provisions and assist workers and employers with forms, account numbers, estates, and lump sum payments for deceased or retired workers.
Clapance Wiles Post Number 222 American Legion elected officers with Dr A G Moore chosen commander. Other officers include C L Minnix first vice commander Walter Barnard second Simon Rick agjanink Harry H Cree finance officer Noah Long sergeant at arms. Delegates to the state convention were Dr A G Moore and Noah A Long.
Camden native Isaac Gregg has been admitted to practice law in Indiana after completing a rigorous study at Indiana Law School. He passed the July bar exam with high marks and will take the oath September 14, 1937 at 2:00 PM in the Supreme Court room, Indiana State House, Indianapolis.
The Rockfield H E Club met at Mrs. Monroe Brechbiel's home for an all day session. A cooperative dinner was served at noon. Members were asked to bring flowers to use for cheering someone.
The Tri County Grange picnic will be held at Delphi City Park on Wednesday August 25. Cass Tippecanoe counties will be represented. Each grange will furnish two numbers on the program.
Lane County Clerk issued a carriage license Saturday to J Rice son of Mr and Mrs Albert Rice of Camden and Rosa W Anderson of Rockfield.
Fort Wayne hosts the National Tin Association sixth convention on August 28–29 at Trier Park drawing 2,000 to 3,000 twins from thirteen states. Visitors register at 8:00 am, a basket lunch follows, and WOWO plans a one hour broadcast with judges awarding prizes. Twins occur about once in 63 births in the United States with varying ratios by gender.
A Union Anti Saloon League service is scheduled at the Baptist Church Sunday evening August 15 at 7 30. Speaker will be Lozier Ziegler a Butler University School of Religion student.
Mrs Flora Wright and Mrs Amy Mra Smith travel with Charlie Paden to Winona Lake to visit Mr and Mrs Will Wright and others.
The 32nd annual Old Settler’s Picnic will be held at Delphi on Saturday August 14 with carnival attractions arriving this week and a band concert Thursday. Harris Carnival Company occupies the city square. Saturday features a city park program with prizes for oldest settler and oldest married couples, the farthest born county resident, and youngest settler, plus songs in old fashioned costume and a sugar camp account. Free parachute jumps balloon ascension and Morris Troupe acts are listed among attractions.
Misses Mary Bohannon and Helen Raber were two of five honor students in a class of 106 who graduated from International Business College at Ft Wayne last week. Each earned 95 points while the other three scored 56 65 and 69. The home girls stood highest in twenty years. Both were outstanding throughout grade and high school work.
Mrs. Mary Billman 70, lifelong Flora resident, died Wednesday morning after several days of illness. Surviving children include Mrs. Willis Mummert, Earl Billman of Kentucky, Mrs. Paul McGraw of Richmond, Floyd Billman of Michigan City, and Mrs. Jessie Niccum. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday at Leedsler funeral home with Rev Collier officiating. Jack Ly and Esther Leslie traveled from Spencer to attend.
The Indiana Board of Agriculture expanded a camping area near the state fairgrounds for families visiting September 4 to 10. Last year 483 families stayed, with a nominal 75 cent per person nightly fee for non campers, free water from a deep well, nearby market, free parking, and pass out checks at registration. Landen L Lattimer in Warsaw, Indiana, will manage the grounds.
The Washington Township Home Economics Club moves its meeting to August 25, announced by club officials. Members are notified to adjust schedules and attend at the usual venue.
Indiana Farm Bureau president Mr Hassil E Schank will speak Thursday afternoon August 19 at the Carroll County Farm Bureau picnic in Flora. The event runs all day with a basket dinner and a special program planned.
In memory of my darling wife Lola Sweet who departed this life August 9 last year. One year has passed since that Sunday noon when God sent his angel and took my love. I shall not forget you until we meet again on the Golden shore.

Berlin reunion attended by Mrs. Margaret Kennedy John Brown and family at Delphi Park Thursday. Elmer Shidler of Russiaville bought a new Hudson from Center Garage. Ray Paul and family plan to attend a district conference in Mooreland next Tuesday in Southern Indiana. Mrs. J A Snoeberger and daughter Pauline of Muncie spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs W W Spoeberger. Nellie Cohee of Deer Creek joined the Metropolitan Store in Logansport. Mr and Mrs Paut J Leslie came from Winter Haven Florida for a two week visit with Mia Alice Leslie and others. Mrs Ella Plank hosted Sunday dinner for Mrs Clyde Aikens and daughter Mrs Herbert Jervis and sons and Mrs Cesil Horn and Gladye Edging returned. Indiana polis nurses training will resume after a short vacation with their parents.
