Gen John A Logan of Illinois died at his Washington residence after a week long illness. The longtime senator and former Civil War general was famed for his public service, debatable oratory, and steadfast Union loyalty. His last public speech urged liberal pensioning for surviving veterans.
Numerous buildings rise on Camden streets as builders and residents rush to expand the village. Houses, stores, and a three story Odd Fellows hall frame a pictured boom while many homes and cottages are planned for next year amid rising real estate activity and prosperity. Copies of Picturesque Camden are offered at three for a dollar but will rise to sixty cents after the first thousand are sold.
The article reports the death at 2:70 this afternoon of General John Logan after a days long illness marked by brain complications and fever. Prominent figures, including Senator Cullom, General Sheridan, and Congressmen, expressed deep sorrow and a national sense of loss.

Alfred J Mansfield a long time East Boston stove dealer died December 22 after a protracted illness. Born in Camden Maine in 1843 he was 63. He came to East Boston in 1871 with his wife and family and ran 3 Border street store until recently. Active Maverick Congregational church member and superintendent of Mission Sunday school on Chelsea street. Funeral at 26 London street with Rev Dr Horr officiating. Interred Woodland cemetery.
Mrs. Mansfield wife of Elnathan Mansfield of Manstield died in Camden on the 27th at age 7 years and d months. Daughter of Jacob Mansfeld of Hope and Sophia Keating of Thome ston. She leaves a husband and three sons Henry Mansfield a confidential clerk in New York Barrows Co Rev Frank Mansfield of Otto NY and George Mansfield. Suffered paralysis a year and began last sickness Oct 19 confined to her room. A kind hearted estimable woman and devoted Congregational church member.

The Knox County Agricultural and Horticultural Society held its annual meeting in Camden. President Orbeton did not seek re election and Col. John D Teuat was chosen president. Trustees were elected, including Kanal Spear Rockland and Isine Coombs Camden. Secretary Le Allen was elected, treasurer Tomima re elected, and several vice presidents named. Attendance was good and optimism for the next year’s fair was high.
Shocking report from Franklin states Dr. Patten, an elderly dentist living alone, died in a fire that consumed his house on Christmas night. Neighbors found the charred body inside as they arrived after the roof had caught fire and alarm was raised.
The Knights of Lalor fear a belief they are too friendly with Socialists and Anarchists. Powderly and leaders seek to remove grounds for this view. An executive order prohibits aiding Anarchists, aiming to curb Socialist influence within the group. The Socialist minority has drawn attention, though few workers support their doctrines, per the New York Tribune.
W S Trefethen of Wortland presents Maine lobster fishery data showing an annual catch around fifteen million lobsters over thirty years with wide commerce implications. Estimated fisher profits total about eleven million dollars while the industry supports cannery work and labor. Prof L C Bateman reports Newark Jersey digging near Corn Horse burial unearthed a war chief grave with weapons indicating a rich historical find.
