City Council held a 43 minute meeting with a large audience and reelected City Clerk F H Burke by unanimous vote. The Mayor withdrew Dr Andrew P Downing as Municipal Hospital Trustee and transfers of Election and Water Department funds were approved.
The Sentinel notes a school committee discussion on elementary exam reforms allowing candidates to select minor subjects including real estate. Council members critique exam rules as reflecting politics rather than student welfare. Cambridge Club hosts Harvard’s A Lawrence Lowell who calls for world leading university status.
A Cambridge business group urges local taxpayers and firms to push for reduced municipal spending. The call asks for fifty letters backing any effort to curb city expenses, warning further silence would be folly and stressing business leaders must act regardless of residence.
The Reorganization Committee of the Inman Trust Company said a Bank Commissioner bill to enforce stockholder liability does not affect the bank’s reorganization plans. Shell Eastern Petroleum sought to extend a residence district building at Memorial drive and Magazine street with Alfred P Lowell representing. Neighbors opposed open air truck parking at 565-67 Putnam avenue led by Walter J Cusick before the chair halted as the board split and the permit was not granted.
Paul Cifrino and his brother John, founders and sponsors of the Home for Italian Children in Boston, funded a full sound on film system for the home. The installation, praised by residents, replaces disc talkies and brings news reels and features to shut ins, as a gift to the city’s aged and infirm.
One of the stormiest sessions of the present school committee produced charges and division over whether master of the elementary school exams should follow pre March 16 rules. Debates centered on equal chances, rule changes, and possible past improprieties. The mayor and members clashed as topics shifted from exam dates to building repairs and coal bids.
