Common Council Debates R R Policies and Budget Moves
At ten pm last Tuesday the Common Council met with President Giles in the chair. Aldermen Thayer and Meyers were absent. A Boston Elevated R R communication on free call tickets for firemen was read and the rule stood. Black failed to secure reconsideration. Nelligan urged supplying car tickets to callmen to ease hardship. The Lombard death notice was adopted by rising vote. A motion to suspend rules for a city employees holiday failed. A $28,000 street sprinkling appropriation was hotly debated, ending in a split vote. No. 1 on the calendar for crossings and a $5,000 sidewalk item were tangled, with loans and maintenance funding discussed. Continuous concerns over permanent improvements and funding persisted among council members.
