Police Relief Assn Buys 10000 Bomber Defense Bond

The Cambridge Police Relief Assn purchased 10000 worth of Bomber Defense Bonds. President Francis A. Gutoski and Treasurer Wm. Anderson presented the bond to Harvard Trust Co. Treasurer Arthur M. Wright for custody in a brief ceremony in the Police guard room. Chief Timothy F. Leahy and officers participated.

St Marys Women Organize for 76th Anniversary Observance

St Marys Women’s Committee plans a three day celebration led by Martin W Ryan with Mt Henry Smith as executive. About 100 women attended a Monday meeting to organize events for the St Marys observance and the 80th anniversary of Rev John A Butler’s ordination.

Fire Captain Shea Dies Suddenly at Home

Fire Captain D. Shea, retired, died suddenly at his home on Clinton Street after an old injury resurfaced. Appointed to the fire department in 1896, he helped fight dangerous blazes and was held in high esteem by friends, Elks, and city officials. Funeral services were held at St Mary’s Church with burial in St Mary’s Cemetery Malden. survived by wife Nellie Conley Shea.

Cambridge zoning debate stirs residents over new ordinance

Senator Arthur F. Blanchard voices concern over a proposed Cambridge zoning and building code. The measure would alter Brattle Highland Herkeley streets and other areas to allow converting single-family homes to two-family dwellings, permit certain institutions, and allow lodgers in residences. Final AG approval pending after city council enactment.

City Council weighs refund suit against four architecture firms

The council, led by Mayor Pro Tem M Hogan Jr, considered suing four architectural firms from Lyons era to recover fees. Council also funded WPA salaries and set a bicycle registry with a 15 cent fee. A Park Rd seat vacancy was filled by Daniel J. Kelly and a drainage plan for Central Sq was proposed. The Finance Committee met to prepare 1942 budget questions for department heads.

Senator Blanchard Pursues Lower Water Rates Bill

Senator Arthur F. Blanchard has filed a bill to reduce water costs in the Metropolitan Water District. The plan averages the 20 year cost over two decades to cap the average wholesale price at 4.44 cents per hundred gallons for cities and towns in the district.
