Democrats supported Casey while Nonpartisans favored the Hamiltonian method. Objections arose to making principal assessors full time city workers and to mayoral appointment of assessors. Hurley proposed deferring the matter to next Tuesday, but the motion failed despite Bolster’s Democratic support.
A centenary tribute to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow drew crowds at Saunders Theatre with Julia Ward Howe, Owen Wister, and Harvard figures in attendance. Col Higgins and Prof Norton spoke, Aldrich read a poem, and letters from Howells and others were read as Cambridge marked the poet’s enduring influence. The couple Mr. and Mrs. James Butler of Mission celebrate fifty years since their November 8 wedding in Boston.
