Fence Removal Faces Partisan Hurdles in City Council
The article portrays a San Francisco style council fight over removing an aging fence near the Agassiz schoolhouse on Sacramento Street. Councilman Bradford with Democrats and Councilman Wood push the project, while Councilman Smithers, backed by Thayer, Chase, and Myers, opposes it on general principles. The majority shows support for the improvement, despite partisan friction and personal conduct accusations.

Alderman Seeks Liberal Fishing Access in Stony Brook
Just a sample from Cambridge politics shows Alderman James proposing an order to allow fishing in Stony Brook and Hobbs Brook reservoirs under water board direction. The board passed the measure unanimously, but the common council killed it after Councilman Thayer aligned the Partisans with President Durant of the water board. The proposal aimed to thin the fish population for healthy sport by Democrats, sparking charges of partisan obstruction and nonpartisan hypocrisy.

COMMON COUNCIL MEETS BEFORE VACATION TERM
The council met last Tuesday night with President Giles presiding as Dow and Nelligan were absent. The public property committee deemed an appropriation of 8500 for militia rooms imprudent. An ion railing around the Washington set was approved amid Black's defense of the grass mound. The water committee’s amendment was re committed. The Scott Weeks hearing legal fees were approved. A Labor Day committee was formed. Two large sidewalk and street repair appropriations, both 8500, were discussed. The janitor’s pay raise was postponed. A 500 lamp appropriation for the electrician was rejected. Council Hicks disputed the report, Chase urged lights, Stetson warned contingent funds are low, and others supported the committee. The rule suspension failed.
