City Solicitor Faces Debate Over Wages and Tenure

City Solicitor Nelligan weighs two legal questions: if the Council can raise police and fire salaries, and whether Supt. Fitzgerald has tenure. He reverses a prior stance on tenure, saying the superintendent may stay on indefinitely on good behavior subject to the committee’s discretion. The second point argues the Council lacks power to raise salaries beyond department heads, amid a looming wage-order call.

St Marys Parish Set For Feb Reunion At Parish Hall

The St Marys Parish annual reunion is planned for Friday night February 28 at St Marys Hall with Fr John A Butler leading. Activities include a costume ball for children and dancing bowling whist and band concerts for adults from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Parish women fundraisers and bridge whist parties support the church building fund. Former Mayor J Edward Barry chairs the general committee with more than a hundred volunteers assisting.

Shea Family Keeps Undertaking Firm Under O’Hare

The family of the late James J. Shea will continue the undertaking business under Frank J. O’Hare. Councillor Shea urges the city to have its own legal adviser. A bid controversy for the new Longfellow School has sparked conferences among the mayor, city solicitor, superintendent of buildings, and a bidder. Supt. Good asserts Cambridge water is superior to metropolitan water. Prohibitionists are urged to judge the difference.

City Council clash over police and fire pay raises

The meeting turned noisy as Pres. Stokes barred action on two ordinances raising police and fire salaries effective April 1 1940. Councillor Wyeth sought a one week delay and a solicitor's opinion while Shea argued for immediate action. debate included rulings, appeals, and plans to seek further guidance from the City Solicitor and Mayor.
