Nearly 700 friends gathered at the Conti in Saville Street to celebrate Rep. J. F. Mahoney and Mrs. Mahoney. Ex-city Council President John W. Lyons served as toastmaster, delivering brief, pointed remarks as the crowd cheered.
Cambridge spends more on estuary services than most comparable cities per the 1934 table from the Bureau of the Census cited in Engineering News Record January 1937. City council halted several veto actions Tuesday night by referring them to the Finance Committee. The mayor's veto on removing a Gas Co conduit on Third Street was sent back after a brief recess discussion. Also returned were vetoes on a pension adjustment for Wm. J. Cogan, funds for connecting old police cables at the central station, and a WPA backed request for a municipal garage on Raymond Street.
School Committeeman Russell Abner Wood failed to advance his motion to reinstate former School Master Raymond A. FitzGerald. The board approved Edward A. Sullivan and Francis X. Mahoney as masters of Fletcher and Kelley schools at set salaries, while John F. Toomey was unanimously approved as Haggerty school master.
