Taxpayers Association Addresses City Council in Cambridge

The Cambridge Taxpayers Association writes to City Council praising open hearings on budget expenditures excluding schools and water. They commend 7 pm meeting time and the balance sheet requirement, noting prior lack of a year balance sheet. They pledge to translate homeowners and business demands into council policy.

Cambridge Library Trustees Plan Branch at TB Hospital

At the first full meeting chaired by Henry J. Mahoney the Cambridge Public Library board formed a publicity committee led by Julia T. Boyle and Daniel A. Buckley. The board backed a branch at the Cambridge Tuberculosis Hospital and limited annual book purchases to 100 dollars for that institution. Joseph Reagan’s army departure prompted a promotion for Joseph Buckley to Stack Supervisor and Lawrence Bilodeau to Stack Assistant.

Nearly 500 attend Cambridge Finance Committee hearing on city budget requests. The Cambridge Taxpayers Assn and Stoughton Bell push for homeowner priority, while officials discuss privatization and civil service reclassification. John H. Young Judaea Service Held at Cambridge Congregation Beth Israel

The Cambridge Young Judaea annual service took place Friday night at Congregation Beth Israel on Feb. 14. The group attended in full to participate in Palestine Youth Dem gees Breckat Jewish Youth activities with Mr. Hyman Sanderson supervising the program. The evening featured Palestinian recitals songs and dances with Arnold Schutzbere as cantor.

City Council Budget Debates Lead to Revisions Request

City Council delayed by an earlier Finance session and heard a Bud get Hearing turnout smaller than expected. Winslow and Parker led a joint bid to require department heads to submit reduced budget figures within a week to curb tax increases.

City Council Budget Order Aims Further Reductions

Councillors Parker and Winslow faced a cool reception as the Cambridge Taxpayers Association prompted a public hearing on the city budget at City Hall February 10. The mayor cut about one million dollars from department proposals and ordered heads to resubmit leaner plans within a week to avoid pay cuts and layoffs, plus a pension eligibility list for each department.
