Welfare totals show 1,450 cases after additions since December 16, 1933, with original savings of 200000 now unlikely.
President Roosevelt deflates the gold in the dollar to raise prices, yet Cambridge merchants refuse to inflate with market swings. They keep prices based on cost plus a reasonable profit, citing lower overhead and strong public confidence. Cambridge buyers note local prices often lag Boston for certain goods. This policy emphasizes cash terms and trust, inviting sustained patronage of Cambridge stores.
Rumors fly of investigations by the City Council and the Mayor into Police Dept. affairs while a rift with a chief lieutenant is hinted. Departments meet with the Mayor on the budget as reorganization plans draw near. City Council may be more vocal this year. Frank Hurley, state auditor, keeps prisoners in line.
John Lyons presided as Ward 3 councillor as the meeting approved a $3,000 purchasing agent salary after debate. A move to raise to $4,500 failed and the vote passed 9 to 4. Kiwanis Club of Cambridge announces the Kiwanis-Kapers at Rindge Auditorium on February 5. Mayor Richard M. Russell will preside as part of a large chorus including City Auditor John McKenzie and Acting City Engineer G. Frank Hooker with many Cambridge officials and local professionals among the performers. The program features eight end men led by City Councillor William D. Hillis, plus Master Choristers and a noted interlocker.
