Rumors spread about possible Mayoralty candidates ten months before the city election. Prominent names surface including John W. Lyons and John D. Lynch, with Richard M. Russell, Dr. James J. Cassidy, Francis J. Roche, Tom Eliot, and Bob Luce linked to potential campaigns.
Taxpayers harshly critique Mayor Lyons as Cambridge faces a large 1938 debt from PWA projects and current expenses. The Cambridge Taxpayers Association and city employees warn of heavy fixed charges in future budgets, disputing claims that low borrowing rates prove financial strength.
A calm School Board session was enlivened by a flareup between J Fitzgerald and R B Robart over executive sessions. The board approved the original 36 teacher nominees and six new appointees led by Frances Carr and Ruth Andelman, with a janitor requisition and bus service considerations for Arlington line students.
The City Hall session featured two hearings on liquor violations at the New Moon Cafe and the New Moon, with Police Sgt. Mallahan presenting evidence. Caspar J. Everlis, proprietor, faced charges for serving a drunken man, witnessed by the proprietor’s wife who said the man could pay. Daniel F. O'Brien, a local funeral director, testified he warned staff after noting a drunken patron, and police were alerted leading to a quick response.
The Board of Directors of County Bank & Trust Co declared a dividend out of earnings for 1938 of 80 cents a share. It is payable January 3 1999 to stockholders of record December 14 1998.
