The card printed for Sir Henry Cole and the South Benington museum director is shown among varied pieces from walrus ivory reliefs in Cologne to a stark maiden work. The display traces a shift back to medieval simplicity as artists revisit humble themes.
The text traces Christmas origins to early centuries, noting uncertainty about the exact celebration time and attributing the festival to early Christian era figures. It explains how the winter solstice season, when daylight increases after darkness, became associated with Christ’s nativity as the Light of Life.
The piece recalls old time Christmas carolers who roamed door to door singing in the season of peace. It notes how households welcomed them with treats and warmth, and how the custom faded yet some places still preserve the midnight minstrelsy tradition as described by Percival Chubb in the Standard.
The Rural New Yorker notes disparagement of Christmas as vanity and greed yet contrasts this with mothers and daughters sacrificing vanity for family happiness. It argues critics burden the season while applying similar false standards year round.
