J Frank Facey recalls annual temperance society outings from 60 years ago in Cambridge and Somerville. He recounts Lake Walden and other spots, special trains from Fitchburg station, and families gathering for meals and dances at open air halls.
Gunmen stage a daylight hold-up near Memorial Drive as Paul Herbert of the Howard Johnson ice cream shop and restaurant along the drive and his secretary Mrs Marion Gardner are attacked. A getaway car blocks his path while two men dash out with pistols. Police respond to the incident.
Fresh Pond Golf Club will host a moonlight sail on August 11 to benefit the Fresh Pond Lab. Over 400 members and friends are expected, led by chairman Wm. Berkeley. The organizing committee includes Mrs. Wm. Reardon Miss Laura Kenney and others with tickets available from committee members or at the clubhouse. A final meeting is set for Monday at 8 30 PM at the Fresh Pond clubhouse to finalize reservations.
The School Board met in harmony naming 36 new appointments across elementary, kindergarten, high school, and departments such as English, French, science, history, stenography, and art. Resignations of five teachers were accepted due to marriages and other causes.
Cambridge voters favor new faces on the School Committee and welcome John Carver as a capable newcomer. Carver, recently chosen as councillor to replace the late P. J. Delaney, is seen as a quiet, competent addition to education oversight.
