Local residents and visitors from Muncie Hagerstown Campbell Taylor and other towns vacationed and toured, with reports of relatives and friends meeting, farm sales and auctions, school openings, wartime mobilization updates, and community events including a green corn festival and Red Cross fundraiser.
Ida Ruth Shock, daughter of Henry and Alice Keiser, born October 17 1893 near Dublin, died August 18 1918 at her home northwest of Hagerstown. She married Frank Shock in 1912 and had two daughters, one died in infancy. A devout member of the Church of the Brethren, she served in Sunday school and Willing Worker class while enduring years of illness. She leaves husband Frank, daughter Helen Lucile, mother Alice Keiser, brother Harry, and many relatives. Her funeral plans were made in advance, with text and songs to be arranged by others.
Lon Hormel builds a veranda at home and James P. Daugherty returns from Chesterfield. Vern DeHays buys 80 acres from Flora Miller. Morton Williams relocates with spouse to Greensfork Pike. Clark families from Connersville visit. J R Ammon of Indianapolis visits Elmer Fagan’s home. Loyal Sons and Daughters plan an entertainment on September 11. Reiser, Pottinger and Klouse visit Beard. Local Red Cross reports July and August activity at Richmond chapter with gowns, sweaters, and supplies.
All men in the draft age 18 to 45 who are not in service or not previously registered must register on Thursday September 12 between 7 am and 9 pm. Local board arrangements allow registration in each township in Wayne county, with Cambridge City as headquarters. Townships include Abington Center Clay Dalton Green Harrison Jackson Jefferson New Garden Perry Washington and Webster.
C H Callaway visits Fort Wayne relatives while Cary club starts year with Mrs D H Warren on Sept 12. Pearl Napier to Frankfort for freight office work. Families including J A Brown and Mrs Heist visit Noblesville and Arcadia. Neal McMahan returns from Muncie after Normal, to teach manual training in Winchester. Parkins, Crist, and Hussey report Camp Taylor trip. Lieut Ivan Parkins in good health. Trustee Crull assigns school hack drivers with a $55 monthly average salary. Washington township schools in Milton and surrounding areas opened Monday. Milton teachers include R A Ranck superintendent and Mildred Crabb as high school principal. roster lists several specialists and country teachers. Manual training position still open.
