Eli Platt, a career petty thief, hides jewels stolen from a house in a junk shop pit. After seven years in prison he returns to find the buried treasure under a chapel cross. He confesses to a priest, the jewels are recovered for their rightful owners, and he receives a $500 gift he refuses to touch. He remains an ex convict, but inwardly transformed and awaiting a spiritual reward.
Ernest Harold Baynes recounts encounters with wild birds that allowed close contact. A pink siskin remained calm when held and resumed foraging near the narrator. A yellow throated vireo let him count eggs, nesting nearby and returning to its treasures. A red breasted nuthatch accepted a stroke while feeding on a tree.

A Swedish engineer creates an underwater kite to guard ships against shoal depth. Made of light canvas with a metal frame, it consists of two sections linked by a coupling and tethered to a deck winch. If the lower section rests on the seabed the coupling releases, triggering a deck alarm while the kite is reeled and reset for continuous duty.
A Chartres Street curio store keeps two alligators for exhibition. A five foot gator enjoys daily hot soapy baths, turning for washing and recognizing staff, while a seven footer resists handling. The proprietors keep both as curiosities and would not part with them.
