Irvin J. L. Harmeier assumed the duties of postmaster in Cambridge City on June 1, succeeding acting postmaster Willard E. Petro. The article notes Harmeier’s long record and previews a brief biographical review from the Connersville News- Examiner’s “30 Years Ago” column.
Irvin Harmeier a Bentonville high school graduate won a National Normal University Lebanon Ohio scholarship for the highest county average. His last year average was 92 percent securing one year free tuition at the university. Prof Ernest R Jeffrey received a term scholarship for the top teacher but may not use the tuition benefit.
Following a Normal School education, the Harmeier family settled in Cambridge City. Mr Harmeier built a banking career while growing the Harmeier Agency, Incorporated, an insurance and real estate firm. Daughter Ruth won a Lincoln High School scholarship, then excelled at Indiana University. Son Robert nears college scholarship with 32 credits earned.
Mrs. Mary Skeen is poorly. Memorial Day visits include Spring Valley Ohio. M E Missionary Society meets at the church Thursday, not with Mrs Smalley. Names include Rev Frank Guyatt Harold Selig Mrs Leslie Wilson. Attendees journeyed to Wayne County Sunday school convention at Economy. Mrs Laura Leonard of Indianapolis visited Mrs Clara Cope. The Riser family spent the weekend in Indianapolis. The Gilberts visited son Charles in Muncie. M E prayer meeting Thursday night. Children's Day program at M E church Sunday morning June 9. Harold Bryant and Mrs. Bryant visited Muncie. Mrs Fisher Annie Redder Dallas Texas with Isaac Day and Nellie Bryant spent days in Pittsburgh. Fisher and Redder left for Texas Tuesday. Frank Scott and daughter Mary Lou of Richmond guests of Johnny Scott. In afternoon Mrs Scott and Mrs Smith visited Eva Hubbard in hospital Indianapolis. Mrs Ed Morgan to Elizabethtown NC for sister’s illness. Walter Fagan of New Castle visited. Harry Wood of Dillsboro visited Luella Frazee and friends. Frazee accompanied them home. Schocklee family home from Kentucky trip. Rev Hugh Ronald and children of Portland visited Frank Walton. J C Hoffman of Indianapolis spent Memorial Day here.
The Miller Ice and Dairy plant received a carload of unusually large Klondyke Tennessee strawberries on Tuesday. The berries will be used to manufacture ice cream this summer and through winter. Twenty nine women worked to clean and store the fruit in cold storage for later use.
The Junior Lin colneers 4 H Baking club met at Kathryn Newkirk's Mount Auburn home on Monday June 3. Miss Newkirk led the election and organization with Charlene Scheidler as president and other officers named. A program committee was appointed. The group planned to meet again today at Lincoln High School for a health examination. Robert Weaver visits his aunt Miss Cora Williams in Miami Florida.
Harmeier real estate and insurance agency in Cambridge City is now Harmeier Agency Incorporated. Hugh R. Foss will manage during I. J. L. Harmeier’s tenure as postmaster. Office remains in The Tribune building with the same companies and services.
Mrs. Raymond Furguson Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dill returned home after a weekend in Paris Illinois with Mr. and Mrs. Don Wright and family. They attended the Paris High School commencement where Miss Jane Wright graduated.
Leo House departs Thursday morning for New York City marking a routine travel leg for the organization led by its public affairs staff and associated supporters.

Lincoln High School coach Willis Dorsett awarded letters to the Wampus Cat baseball players after a delayed materials issue. The squad went six wins and three losses, featuring 17 aspirants with M Gauker Mickee and Edwards as the graduates of the diamond team.
Mrs. J. H. Ayres led a cleanup of Capitol Hill Cemetery assisted by Mr. Maple and sons. The flag staff was repainted and a flag donated by W R C No 151 along with $25 was provided for the work. They also funded flags for Riverside cemetery and the new school building. Eight loads of gravel were laid on the cemetery road. the note thanks all who contributed money or service to beautify the resting place of forty eight Union soldiers.
The sale of antiques by Mrs James Carpenter of Connersville will be held Friday in the Boyd building just east of Grigsbys drug store. It opens at 10 oclock Friday morning and runs all day. Public inspection is offered Thursday evening from 6 to 8 oclock.
A long list of social visits and greetings dominates the notes, confirming gatherings in Jacksonburg Connersville Richmond Liberty New Castle and West Manchester. Names include Secrest Doddridge Gipe Hutchins Murray Lamb Teagarden and Hoffman with church Ladies Aid activities and a May 29 session at Mrs. Oldaker’s home.
On Memorial Day the Garrett car overturned in a ditch on the New Lisbon road near Straughn. Mrs. Gus Garrett died at Fayette Memorial hospital after the crash. Passengers included daughter Mrs Edwin Jones and Mrs Arthur Cosgrove. driver Harley Garrett and another passenger were treated at Connersville hospital. Cosgrove suffers serious injuries. others released the same evening.
The Eastern Star chapter hosts a cooperative dinner for Mrs Hugh Foss at 6 30 PM this Thursday at the Masonic hall followed by a reception. Members should bring a covered dish sandwiches and their own table service.
The Junior and Senior Life Saving classes directed by Willis Dorsett met at Lake Webb for the inaugural session. Seventeen of 37 juniors and eight of 13 seniors attended. three juniors Elmer Jordan Virgil Eckhart Robert Lingenfelter and two seniors Walter Clugstone Ralph Walters joined. Total pupils reach 55.
Mr and Mrs Charles Dairy of Cincinnati traveled last week to Milton to be with Mrs Dairy’s relatives after the illness and death of Mrs Dairy’s father George Murey. They were joined by Mr and Mrs O G Fox who spent Sunday in Economy with the Cains and Mr and Mrs Elmer Newkirk who stayed with the Martins in Richmond.
Testing mechanical condition of cars seems necessary due to owners’ reluctance to keep vehicles safe. 29 percent need brake work, 56 percent have fair or poor tires, and 63 percent require lamp adjustments. In emergencies, good brakes and tires may prevent serious accidents. Better too much vigilance than a life of regret.
Straughn families visited relatives in Cincinnati Ohio and near Willow Branch Indiana. Mrs Grace Cummins hosted the W F M S group and entertained a large dinner with several local families including the Woodward Cummins Judkins and Ward households. Mrs Roy Eggers traveled to Cincinnati to visit her daughter and family remaining in town for the week.
Beech Grove residents hosted and traveled for family visits. Mrs. Alice Umphries hosted Elmer and Clyde Fryman and Oldham spouses in Shelbyville. Memorial Day saw Woodward Families visiting Cincinnati. Ed Benjamin remains bedridden after flu relapse. A birthday dinner honored Mrs. Ernest Ward near Spiceland with many relatives in attendance.
The Cambridge City Jackson Township School Board lists the 1935 36 teaching staff. Lincoln High School will be led by Supt. L W Arburn with Floyd Hines as principal and a roster of teachers. Central Dublin and Pershing buildings also name principals and teachers, reflecting a busy year ahead.
Miss Ber nice Hormel of Cambridge City, a Ball State senior, is among twenty five students on the Ball State honor roll for 1954 35. Under the new system she and three other seniors will receive special recognition during senior week. she is active in Kappa Delta Pi YWCA Girls Club Math club Orient staff member and Student Association executive committee representative. she also participates in Spotlight and is treasurer of Pi Zeta. She is a 1931 graduate of Hagerstown High School.
The Ladies Aid Society meets with Mrs. John Kiser. Help One Another club gathers May 29 led by Mrs. Myrtle Jones with a kitchen care paper and refreshments for members and guests. Kinship visits, funeral banquets, and Children’s Day plans surface as residents host, attend and prepare for upcoming events.
