Ux-Governor Alvatde returns to town, greeted by Capt. Mervine and friends. He praises Com. Stocktenior and urges humane treatment of prisoners, insisting those who bore arms deserve rights and citizens of California receive proper consideration.
A magistrate heard a complaint of an ox theft but investigation showed a quarrel over the animal. Both suspects were confined for the night, the forfeiture was imposed, the ox returned to its owner, and a fine set to deter future acts.
The Oregon Spectator is commended as a neat compact sheet by Mr. Bartlett. It notes their talk of institutions with pride, and mentions Oregon's prohibition on ardent spirits, a $20 fine for clandestine glass sales, and the aim for temperance to bolster morality, enterprise, and wealth.
The piece describes the perils of high altitude ascent, noting how reduced air pressure at 21 000 feet causes severe symptoms. The Ambarque American, under Captain Page, arrived in Lahaina after a whaling mishap on June 4 near islands north of Hawaii. Four crew were lost when a whale struck their boat. two others were saved by another boat. Captain Page later brought the ship to port with several crew discipline issues. The vessel had spoken with the Black Warrior of New London and Dover of New Bedford during the voyage, reporting multiple whale catches in mid May and early June.
The British Bible Society, founded in 1864, reports annual income near 90,000 pounds and over 1,000,000 Bibles and Testaments in 160 languages. In its fortieth year it published 676,624 at home and 297,407 from foreign depots, totaling 944,041 copies. with 313 working days and 10 hours per day, average output would be about 33,016 copies daily.
