In Stam ford Connecticut a flood tears through streets as torrential rains saturate New England and New York area. An amphibious duck evacuates residents from stalled vehicles while refugees seek safety. Thirty one people are reported dead in the East from the floods.
The Citizens AntiSimog Action Committee warned of a smog disaster endangering about 7000 Los Angeles County residents and affecting 4,000,000 others. CASAC plans a mass meeting at Pasadena City College with Dr. Clarence A. Mills of the University of Cincinnati as keynote. The figures derive from Mills book and a U S Public Health Service report citing the 1948 Donora disaster.
Torrential rains from remnants of Diane crippled seven northeastern states, killing at least 31 people and displacing thousands. Property losses run into hundreds of millions as rivers rose well above flood levels, with road and rail service halted and many communities without power or safe drinking water. Connecticut declared a state of emergency as guards were called up and relief efforts mobilized.
