A Pasadena girl aged and named representative of the Pasadena Exchange Club advances to the statewide talent finals in Fresno California. She will perform a Elvis Presley routine with her French poodle Jocka while accompanied by her father Jean Kunkel. Architects Urge City For Pasadena West Side Redevelopment

Pasadena architects urged the City Board to curb deterioration in the western end by forming a citizen redevelopment agency. Director Clarence Oakley objected, but the board voted to file the letter from the local American Institute of Architects chapter for study. Lee V. Klein said the group supports an agency without pay under a plan with the Community Redevelopment Agency and the Urban Renewal Administration.

An appeal filed by the state to overturn Judge Whyte’s reduction of Walter Borchers’s murder verdict. Borchers, an ex-Pasadena insurance agent, was convicted of second degree murder for Dorothy McCully’s death but Whyte lowered it to voluntary manslaughter, citing insufficient proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The appeal argues higher degree conviction could be supported by the evidence.

County Sues for Land to Create Eaton Canyon Park

The Pasadena Board of County Supervisors ordered eminent domain to secure a 1 acre parcel for Eaton Canyon Park. Supervisor Warren M M Dann moved, with County Counsel Harold W Kennedy to file suit. Property valued at about $60 000 sits north of Sierra Madre Blvd, south of Orange Ave extension, near Eaton Canyon and the Southern California Edison right of way.

Newsprint Demand Bases and U.S. Supply Outlook

The Commerce Department reports U.S. production rising faster than consumption and forecasts a tighter future supply of American newsprint. By 1959 dependence on imports may drop by about 500,000 tons from the previous year, signaling a shift in the domestic paper market.
