The Forest Service said nearly all of about 150 fires burning in New Mexico and Arizona forests were under control after scorching 30 000 acres and forcing evacuation of 200 people. Winds could rekindle some blazes along hastily drawn lines. In northern Colorado four fires remained out of control near Rocky Mountain National Park, and a 20 200 acre Sitgreaves National Forest blaze near Holbrook Arizona drew 50 miles of fire line.
The California Republican assembly opened a three day meeting in Santa Barbara with the view that President Eisenhower will not always remain a candidate and Mayor George Christopher urged delegates not to display defeatism about other GOP hopefuls. He stressed the party must consider Ike as both man and possible candidate while acknowledging the eventual end of his candidacy.
President Eisenhower’s recovery accelerates as he plans a Monday session with Richard Nixon to discuss potential second term politics. The White House says the talk will address reelection plans while Ike’s health continues to improve after surgery.
