San Francisco faced another flood threat as a new crest moved down the Feather River toward a broken levee. Armed men guarded against looters while rescuers searched for more bodies and Army engineers warned the river was rising from yesterday’s rain.
Clouds are expected to clear this afternoon after scattered moisture earlier. The Air Pollution Control District forecasts a smog-free period today with no eye irritation. Highs near 60 degrees. yesterday reached 68 and 56. Snow level down to 0 feet.
Repair crews battled a 33 foot levee gap that sent up to 15 feet of floodwaters into Yuba City, home to about 10 000 residents, as officials predicted a new crest near 8 am. Engineers conceded uncertainty and warned risks remain high.

CHICAGO AP America ends its late Christmas holiday with a possible all time traffic death record. United Press tallies 502 traffic fatalities along with 168 non traffic deaths and 668 total. National Safety Council urged careful driving as the holiday ends. Two other fatal incidents reported cross country include a car train crash in Connecticut and a plane crash in Indiana.
Weather update indicates showers early today with drying later. Temperatures near 60 today and around 68 to 50 yesterday, with little overall change.
