A 30 year old San Quentin guard confessed to aiding an ex convict and a second man in kidnapping and robbing an Oakland supermarket owner and his wife Sunday night. The guard Jesse Trout and his wife Shirley 25 were arrested after one of the robbers was killed by police.
Richard John McCarrigle, 32, of Fi Mante California, died after his car collided with a semitrailer on U.S 69 south of Jewell Iowa. His vehicle and part of the truck burned. The truck was driven by Albert C. Rother of Farmington Minnesota. Rother suffered minor burns. McCarrigle had reportedly been a patient at a Rochester Minnesota hospital.
Pasadena directors received a letter from The Citizens Committee for Use of the Rose Bowl as a Municipal Park and Recreation Area. The group warned against leasing the Rose Bowl to a private baseball team and urged a full public study and notification before any action.
In Verona Italy a group of Malian convicts at Campone prison hosted a Christmas party for 18 month old Simonetta Armelini and her mother Gina serving nine years for thefts. Under Italian law the child cannot be separated from her mother until age two. The inmates voted to give the girl a festive celebration with all the trimmings.
New York subway and Long Island Rail Road service resumed after a brief, compulsory walkout sparked by overtime holiday schedules. The mediation board brokered a satisfactory agreement, ending the disruption within minutes and restoring normal operations for commuters. Senator John L. McClellan announced planned hearings on the Los Angeles rubbish scandal in Washington not later than next May.
The government says it will retry James R. Hoffa and two coredefendants on whitetap conspiracy charges after a jury deadlock in the first trial. The case is restored on the federal district court calendar for retrial in New York and Los Angeles listings.
Aga Khan leader of the Ismaili Moslem sect visiting Vienna with his family reportedly contracted flu. A local physician was said to be treating him as the dignitary rests at a private hotel during Friday engagements.
