Independent staffer Ray Duncan recalls a busy Nash's basement Santa scene where children line up for gifts and questions. A young girl asks for a toy hippopotamus while Santa reflects on imaginative parents and the wonder of belief at Christmas.
A 11 year old telephone fineman who disappeared last Saturday on a Christmas tree cutting expedition was found weak but unhurt in the storm drenched Cohasset area. Sheriff Larry Gillick said E. H. Henman of Chico was found by a search party including his three brothers as he walked from the isolated area. He had no food or matches and slept in the open until a cabin was found. Posses of up to 100 men combed the area for three days.
DASADENANS witness peak mercantile glory with crowded streets and unprecedented hustle. Traffic snarls, scarce parking, and frustrated shoppers fill side streets during the busy period.
Secretary Dulles urged a sharp increase in foreign aid to sustain U.S. leadership in Asia and the Middle East. The request totals about 8 billion dollars for military and economic aid for the next fiscal year, with 5 billion for military aid and 3 billion for accelerated economic programs. The 1957 budget would set aid at around 4.4 billion, up from 4.2 billion, signaling a continued high level of assistance for some time. House members Caleb Adlai and Omar Burleson warned the proposal would face tough scrutiny in Congress, predicting heavy opposition.
