United Nations coverage reports the Soviet Union vetoed Japan’s bid to join the UN for a third day. The veto also blocked a US backed plan to recommend Japan’s admission to the General Assembly. All other Security Council members supported the Japanese bid in part of the ongoing debate.
Phoenix police and Secret Service halted a counterfeit plot possibly totaling up to one million dollars in an Arizona State Highway Department office. David E. Stone Becker, 29, a litho press operator, and William Fr. Shearer, 26, Mountain States Telephone clerk, were arrested after a three week undercover investigation. Officers found many $10 and $20 negatives and nearly 100 pounds of quality paper. Both men face charges of possessing materials to make counterfeit money. Stone Becker waived preliminary hearing. Shearer requested one with December 22 set as date.
A low fog kept smog from worsening yesterday as officials noted little sunshine. The Air Pollution Control District said visibility worries were imagination and ozone levels dropped from 45 to around 10 per million, with Pasadena area favored if sun breaks through. Cairo warned the United Nations that Egypt and Syria would respond with a collective Arab action against any future aggression. Dag Hammarskjold received a note from Prime Minister Gamal Abdel Nasser stating Egypt would deploy its armed strength against Israel, supported by a unified command with Syria under Maj. Gen. Abdel Hakim Amer. The foreign office summoned UN Security Council diplomats and delivered copies of the warning, stressing collective rather than individual military action.
