Caltech seismologists reported an offshore earthquake of magnitude around 6.7 about 5700 miles west of Pasadena in the Pacific. Dr Charles F Richter estimated the quake near the New Hebrides or West Pacific islands, recorded at 6 15 am. Amateur seismologist Fred Robinson of San Diego logged three tremors at 6 15 am 11 01 am and 3 49 pm with weaker intensities. Richter noted the 11 01 am and 3 49 pm events were not clearly shown on his seismograph. The San Francisco quake would have been about 7.5 on the scale.
