California records more than 50 traffic deaths making this the worst Thanksgiving holiday toll in state history while national fatalities exceed 400 near midnight. The report notes the surge during the holiday travel period with California bearing a heavy share of the fatalities.
Nine persons were injured in a three car crash at Azusa Avenue and Paramount Street. Vera Osborn, 48, stopped to turn left and was rear-ended by LeRoy Dalton, 33, sending Osborn into a southbound car driven by Francis Piper, 29. At Intercommunity Hospital in Covina, seven victims were released, with Dorothea Dalton remaining with head and neck injuries. A separate incident on California Street and Raymond Avenue sent Milton Plowman to Huntington Memorial Hospital after a spin into a house. Alhambra police later arrested Cruz Hogar Roblero, 23, for drunk driving after a collision that injured Theresa Sugar and Patricia Sugar. The national holiday toll included at least 305 auto deaths since the holiday period began, with various counts reported from plane crashes and misc mishaps.
Severe tropical storm Nina battered Kauai with winds exceeding 100 mph, prompting evacuations and flood fears across the valley floors. Honolulu avoided a direct hit but reported a fatality and a lineman electrocuted during recovery efforts as the storm shifted course toward the islands.
President Eisenhower will fly back to Washington today to assume personal command of a cabinet meeting and likely a bipartisan conference of 35 congressmen tomorrow.
