Civil rights campaigners led a 1000-strong march down Chicago’s Southwest Side pressing for open housing. Police kept order as the crowd faced jeers and isolated vandalism near real estate offices, with some violence feared but largely avoided.
Ruby lawyers ask the U S Supreme Court to overturn a Texas court ruling denying a writ of habeas corpus claiming Judge Brown’s personal interest in the case tainted due process. The petition argues Ruby was illegally held and seeks release, with the Texas appeal already upheld by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.
A year-old Altadena boy fell through a plastic dome on a school roof Tuesday, sustaining a facial scab and was rushed to Huntington Hospital Friday morning. Deputies handed their vandalism report to juvenile detectives as the youth was admitted around 10 am and described as doing well by hospital staff.
An unemployed janitor, Joseph Davis, strode into a Winchester Western Division cafeteria in New Haven and fired a pistol, wounding four workers before police fatally shot him. Davis had been discharged the day prior from his janitorial job at the plant amid a shooting spree probe.
Witnesses described a man in a blue suit entering the Winchester Club cafeteria at lunchtime and firing a .38 revolver. Mrs Re Becca Wilson, 34, of New Haven, was found murdered with a slashed throat. Mrs El Jen Koch, 51, a Hamden secretary, and several others were wounded as police officer John Widman shot the assailant, who died on arrival at Yale New Haven Hospital. The incident occurred near police headquarters in New Haven with high temperatures and a smog forecast reported for the area.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration awarded Honeywell Inc. of Minneapolis a five million dollar contract to build scans and attitude control systems for the Mariner spacecraft set to fly by Mars in 1969. The project, under NASA oversight, involves temperature change protection and instruments, with Pasadena’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory directing the effort and San Jose and San Joaquin Valley regions noted for related activities.
