Rebellious politicians clash in Topeka as Republicans seize representative hall and militia mobilizes. Gov. Lewelling appeals amid armed factions and a growing threat of bloodshed. Separate note endorses annexation of Hawaii with Minister Stevens reporting broad support and European powers restraining objections. New York Times commentary referenced.
President Cleveland announced four cabinet selections: Walter Q. Gresham of Illinois as Secretary of State John G Carlisle of Kentucky as Secretary of the Treasury Daniel S Lamont of New York as Secretary of War Wilson Bissell of Buffalo as Postmaster General He said there is no mystery and that acceptances and public notice would follow. A further announcement on other positions may come later this week.
On February 14 Secretary Foster telegraphed Minister Stevens in Honolulu approving his responsive action to the provisional Government of Hawaii requesting a protectorate. The message included guidance for future actions and negotiations toward U.S. annexation.
Mr and Mrs Lyons of West Caldwell mourn two children lost to diphtheria after a brief illness. Their remaining child and Mr Lyonsとも contracted diphtheria on the Sabbath. James Beat reports strict quarantine at Lyons residence and precautionary efforts to halt spread. Executed January 31, 1898, the document lists Flora Payne Whitney as the testatrix with witnesses Stetson Seager Bray. The accompanying affidavit for inheritance tax estimates personalty at 2.9 million and real estate at 0.475 million?
Judge William Lindsay elected by the Kentucky Legislature on February 14 in a joint ballot to succeed John G. Carlisle in the U S Senate. Senate vote Lindsay 18 to Angnatus 9. House vote Lindsay 63 to Willson 18. Populists supported Lindsay. Lindsay, born 1825 in Virginia, had served as Kentucky judge and chief justice.

The solicitor was directed to notify the Roseland Railway to place a flagman at Roseland avenue crossing and to advise which officers are to be voted for at the upcoming borough election. The clerk was tasked to obtain tax arrears details from Collector Hoage by February 20. The meeting adjourned to February 20. The State Industrial School for Girls at Trento issued its twenty second annual report.

Grangers from across the state rally in Trenton to oppose the Agricultural Commission bill. Assemblyman Clarke introduces a curative measure by Frederic W. Stevens to fix defects in last year’s Freeholder bill and to extend terms for Tor-at-Large Tieiley and Bruggeman. The bill would set terms to December 1894, altering the prior April elections.
