Tanjong Karang Develops into Malaya’s Rice Granary
The Tanjong Karang project in Selangor has converted 45 000 acres of swamp into rice land with 80 000 settlers. By end of 1950 another 5 000 acres will be colonised. 23 000 irrigated acres and 22 000 with controlled drainage support plantings. Colonists receive three acres of den and one acre kampong land, with rent relief for three years. Fourteen co operative rice mills serve the community and schools expand with government help. The scheme aims to raise Selangor to a leading fourth rice producing state and reduce Malaya’s dependence on imports.
