Circulating notices from Montana publishers urge buyers and advertisers to respond by mail. The message asks locals in Butte and Helena to express interest in goods and services, promising prepaid postage and subscriber benefits.
A Pittsburgh Leader recounts an October scene where Sherman is persuaded to run for President but declines, noting his lifelong habit of voting little and accepting civil office only with reluctance. The story blends election theatrics with a preacher’s acclamation and a classroom-style discussion of scientific color theory from Dr. Newbury, linking temperaments to color rays and advising neutral tones in public rooms to balance minds.
A cheap telegraph made from two tin cylinders covered with parchment forms a practical pocket device. A pin pierces the center of each drum and a strong thread is threaded and knotted to prevent withdrawal. Vibration carries speech or whispers along the thread, enabling communication at long distances in work sites and field settings.
Academy of Sciences speaker Labrain A. Bryant outlined fur seal biology at the United States Territory island colonies. He described leasing to the Alaska Commercial Company, payments per skin, and government revenue and noted the species remains plentiful. He explained seasonal seal movements, pup development, and colony origin near Beluitug and Copper islands. The lecture covered killing methods, skinning, curing, Aleut involvement, and strict skin quotas, ending with questions and thanks to Captain Bryant.
A scientific advocate argues two thirds of New York miasma comes from clogged kitchen sinks. He recommends brick sealing the sink, washing soda to cut grease, and lime to deodorize drains. A reader adds that sleeping with windows open to let in outdoor air improves health, reducing indoor air accumulation.
N I E of Croton New York reports a belt lacing method to Leffel’s Mechanical News. He describes using an 18 inch wide half inch thick leather belt and adjusting end spacing to prevent breakage. He claims lacing with horse-hide and maintaining 1.5 inch end gaps yields over a year of use without repairs.
A large anti-Chinese meeting at Turner Hall drew members who pledged to force Chinamen from the area. Early morning, armed crowds patrolled the railroad line and streets, driving workers away from the Carson Launcher Company flume before marching toward Empire then planning to return to Carson to continue the expulsion. The sheriff deputized locals to help arrest leaders upon their return, amid tense crowds and reports of planned escalation.
A cautious defense of General Jackson juxtaposes his faith with practical battlefield action. The author argues brave men may hide behind trees for safety without diminishing military prowess or devotion to Providence.
At the English Society of Engineers a paper by A J Trewman discusses fresh air supply and removal, chimney sizing by room, and two methods to prevent backdraft from adjacent buildings. He cites a slab over the chimney mouth and converging top plates as solutions, noting an ordinary house vent area of 48 by 14 inches.
A Sheffield correspondent notes business slows in large firms, yet mechanical progress rises as foreign makers gain share. February import data show gains in bar iron iron manufactures and unwrought steel, while Sheffield loses older patronage to cheaper rivals, signaling a shift in global demand and local losses.
A Pearse Endwise coal and iron company sample is described as iron sheets far thinner than ordinary paper. The specimen sheets measure around .004 inches thick, with factory stock at .11015 inches, showing toughness and flexibility similar to printing paper. Mr Rooper and the company are credited for the rolling method that prevents sticking, per the Warrington Guardian.
A brief survey notes new Chubb & Son lock designs countering acid attacks on safe mechanisms. It cites Dr Carter on milk digestibility, favoring barley water over alkaline or starchy diluents. An American machinery update praises US cars’ popularity in Brazil and calls for broader adoption of agricultural equipment in the United States.
